TATA CHEMICALS CHESHIRE | 174 ACRES

Demolition of a redundant Soda Ash Plant.

A challenging Demolition Project to tear down redundant Soda Ash Plant buildings in TCE’s Winnington site, Cheshire, within a 174 acre live site.

The demolition of the old Soda Ash plant, with original drawings dating back to the late 1920’s, represented a science and engineering challenge in safely and efficiently tearing down a steel building structure without impacting TATA’s adjacent live chemical manufacturing and energy plant operations.  Proximity to the local community and residential areas was another key consideration.

The Soda Ash Plant had been used in the manufacture of Sodium Bicarbonate via the Ammonia Soda Process.

Our involvement expanded from the initial contract negotiations and collaboration with contractors to execution of the Demolition Hazard Study (HAZDEM) and final dismantling and demolishing of the buildings to deliver a clear site for further development. The technical and intricate demolition of the buildings took 24+ months to complete.

Key Facts

  • Demolition of the factory building comprising of a large steel frame spreading across seven levels of a steel gantry construction.
  • Demolition of the main plant in the factory comprising of 4 Light Ash and 2 Heavy Ash Dryers, Secheurs, with conveyors and elevators
  • Demolition of one Heavy Ash Silo and two Light Ash Silos
  • Demolition of the Light Ash loading conveyor involving a crane lift directly above the main High Voltage feed to the site.
  • Removal of all asbestos under licensed controlled conditions
  • Cleaning of the former building before staring demolition.

Safety was our team’s state of mind throughout the project, and it took leadership to drive it.  We worked with a collaborative but challenging style, a team that evolved as the work progressed and funnelled attention to detail.

“As part of our future development plans TCE was faced with the challenging task of demolishing 24 very large and complex redundant industrial buildings at our Winnington, Cheshire site, including the iconic [60 metre high] former limestone kilns.

As many of the buildings to be demolished dated from the first half of the 20th century and were closely entwined with live operational assets, it was critical to TCE that the project was implemented safely, and without impacting on our adjacent ongoing chemical manufacturing and energy plant operations. Revolution Projects were appointed to manage the project on behalf of TCE, from its inception, to the procurement and contract negotiation phases, via the detailed design and “Hazdem” phase, and through to implementation and completion of the project.

Delivering the project required from Revolution Projects a forensic attention to detail, a tenacity to identify and find a way of resolving critical safety and interface issues, and an ability to work with, as well as challenge, TCE’s chosen demolition contractor. The end result was a project delivered on time, on budget, and safely, without affecting ongoing operations. We would not hesitate to appoint Revolution Projects for similar work in the future”.
